Our Approach to Accountability
Since the inception of Crossroads, we’ve been focused around safety. We know that when we listen to the most safety-conscious members of our community, everyone benefits. That’s why our all-volunteer team has spent countless hours in focus groups, user interviews, and message exchanges with the community. When people share concerns, we do our best to listen and to be responsive with updates to the app. When it comes to banning people from Crossroads, our process is:1. Community Accountability Team review:
Bring the information reported to us into a council of third party community members who review the information and decide on next steps. These are nomads who do not work on the app, represent diverse experiences on the road, and in some way have already demonstrated a thoughtful commitment to community safety and accountability.2. Information gathering:
Depending on the case, the team will attempt to reach out to both the reporter, reported user, and, if appropriate, the survivor (who may not be the same as the reporter) to better understand the situation, ensuring that the input and experience of the survivor is prioritized.3. Action:
Reach a decision and take action, guided by principles of transformative justice. Our goal is not just to address the harm but to support accountability, growth, and healing for all involved. Depending on the situation and severity of the issue, this process may take weeks or months. Actions can range from a reflection prompt sent to the reported user in minor cases, to a mediated dialogue session focused on understanding and repair, a temporary ban with conditions for continued app use after demonstrated change, or, in severe cases, a full and permanent ban when necessary to attempt to improve community safety. There has been a lot of thought that has gone into these steps and the safety features within the app. Some of our favorite features include:
- Different location visibility per friend acceptance
- Blocked users are flagged to you in a Beacon’s RSVP section
- Screenshots can not be take of the map tab
- Users can hide themselves in the app at anytime
- You can block individual users anytimeWe’re also proud of the Community Commitment that many people helped with, that users agree to when making an account and even creating a Beacon. We also want to provide transparency to how we’re handling reported users of Crossroads and why. After long discussions with the team, we found these pillars resonated with the community at large and serve to guide our processes:Empower people
We want to make an app where everyone is empowered to control their safety. People’s risk tolerance for safety varies drastically by person, so we’ve focused on empowering users to customize their experience to match their risk tolerance.Betterment before banning
We’re inspired by abolitionist teachings, particularly those rooted in transformative justice and community accountability, emphasizing growth, healing, and the belief in people’s capacity to change rather than punitive exclusion. We believe healing and transformation happen in connection, not isolation, and that people are not disposable and have potential for growth. We see Crossroads as having potential to do things differently than our carceral society.
At the same time, we know dangerous people certainly exist and we do not want them using Crossroads. But simply banning a problematic person on an app doesn’t eliminate their presence, and they’ll likely continue to be seen around. Is it possible to show them how to be better? We hope so.
However, if someone is not able to demonstrate learning, understanding, and betterment through words and actions, then they will be banned. We are not the police
Nomads sometimes do exactly what our parents warned us not to — meeting strangers in the middle of nowhere. We want to put up as many guardrails as possible to make sure people feel safe doing this, but locations of Beacons or even users can be shared outside of Crossroads, and we do not want to give the illusion of true safety (as discussed at length in our Community Commitment). Crossroads aims to help inform people to make smart real world choices, empowered by the information in an app, but we are limited in our ability to guarantee safety.
We also do not have the capacity, experience, or authority to launch investigations into individual community members or accusations. We can do our best to gather information and make the decisions we feel are in the best interest of the community, and we are open (as always) to feedback on how we handle these decisions.
The team has been part of this small community for years, and we do not want to make a ban decision based on who or what we know, to avoid creating a “cool kids club” or decisions based on a rumor. Instead of making top-down decisions on individual users, our approach focuses on empowering the community with tools to make informed choices about their interactions.Having only launched recently (at the time of writing, we’ve only had 3 reports total) we have been working to establish these robust practices as an investment for the long term, and are continually open to feedback and contributions to our approach. As we look ahead at features like messaging or photo sharing, we’re continuing to prioritize safety-conscious feedback. This feedback and ideas help us design new features, like our planned ”SOS” button, allowing anyone to notify users around them if they feel unsafe and want help. Most of all, we hope to hear from you and communicate to you directly. For any reason, please DM @findcrossroads or email [email protected].
